Hi again!
Now, where was I?
Ah, yes, I remember now.
So, I had pooped on the floor because Dad had opened the screaming door with a talon-ed monster on the other side. Okay, maybe, I overreacted a little. Or, maybe, the monster got away, or shapeshifted, or got scared of Dad because he’s really big. Maybe the monster was much smaller.
I don’t know, I’m just a dog.
A small one, Mom says. My friend Bo, he’s a dog too. He’s bigger. But, we aren’t just any kinda dog. Mom says we’re “hound” dogs. I don’t know what that word means either, but it sounds like your howling when you say it. Anyway, Bo is a good sniffer, like me. But I think I’m even better. We may look alike, apart from our size, but I think that my sniffer is superior because I’m so much closer to the ground.
Wait.
That means he can sniff the upper ground stuff. I can’t sniff those. I can’t reach them! Aw, man…
Anyway, as for the door that wasn’t screaming by itself. It turns out there was a small, black spiney thing behind it. I got closer. I could smell the smell again—after the poop smell faded, of course. Bravely, I followed the smell straight to the creature sitting, staring at me. At first he didn’t move, then, all of the sudden he leaned back and picked up his…paw, I think?
*BOP*
The stinging! It was back!
I blinked the tears out of my eyes while Mom consoled me, again. This time, the monster really got me good.
But how? Everything happened so fast. I was trying to identify the smell and got caught up in the rat thingy’s “paw” situation. Maybe it was a kind of dog? I couldn’t tell yet. I was just about to get a really good look at it, and I must have missed the monster. Somehow.
While I sat in the corner Mom and Dad were talking to the “cat,” I heard her say. I think my friend, Bo, has one too. He kinda smells like it. In fact, I remember him saying something about a “box of ‘kitty’ treats.” I love treats. I don’t know what a “kitty” is, but maybe it’s a special kind of treat. But, I also don’t know what that has to do with a “cat” or why Bo can have them and I can’t. He said they were crunchy and funky. Like dirt, but way better.
Some dogs like dirt. I am not one of them. But, I get his meaning.
Bored, I got up to sniff around. Mom and Dad were busy anyhow. I could get some proper work done and finish identifying the situation. I just have to watch out, though. Monsters are hiding.
I found a wrapper of some kind, it smelled pretty good. Like a cookie, but sweeter and sticky. I licked it. It was okay. The floor stretched out, cold and uneven. The smells felt distant, but concentrated. I wouldn’t get a strong smell until I was closer. Usually, that’s not the case. Outside, especially when it’s really hot, you can smell everything. But right now, I can only get a little bit at a time. It’s super annoying for my investigation.
I walked over to Mom and Dad to check on them. I sniffed the “cat’s” butt. Now that was a weird smell! Funky. He didn’t seem too interested in me, so I left and continued my inspection. There was a funny stinking chair in the middle of the room. Kinda like the cat’s butt, but also other things? Food, maybe. Meaty with gravy.
“eeoOOOWW”
I jumped at the sound. Glad it wasn’t a door though. That would have been scary.
As I turned my head back towards the chair, I noticed what was under it. A box. The smell was definitely funky. I stuck my nose in further and found…rocks? But like, there were big rocks and really, really tiny rocks too. I kept nosing around in there and found, wouldn’t you know it, a good smelly one. Funky and crunchy too!
“Lilyyy, what are you doing?”
“Lily?”
“Crap, LILY, don’t eat…!”
I didn’t hear Mom.
I can’t wait to tell Bo!
To be continued…
