The Door (a dance film)

a movement translation of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House."

Dancers: Minna Ilse Kast; Burke Swanson

Choreographer: Minna Ilse Kast

Filming: Allen Childress

Synopsis:

This work features a closer look into the power dynamics of the married couple, Torvald and Nora. 4 scenes were broken down to use, only, the necessary lines between the two characters to support the plot. The lines were then translated into movement. Three locations are used; displaying the movement in three different environments. Both dance and theatre techniques were used to create this new work with new language, highlighting the breakdown in communication and, subsequently, marriage. Note: ‘tis a silent film.

fun fact: Minna was going through a divorce during this time and was not supposed to perform as Nora, but to be the invisible choreographic narrator.

super fun fact: Burke was a part of the original Broadway cast of The Rose Tattoo as Jack.

the superest fun fact: we danced on concrete 95% of the time; we only fell out of a lift once.
